Admission Documents Checklist
A short list, and the four foreseeable problems that turn it into a three-week delay.

The checklist
| Qualifying marksheets | All years or semesters, plus the certificate where issued. |
|---|---|
| Provisional certificate | Where the final degree has not yet been issued. |
| Photo identity | Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID. |
| Passport photographs | Recent, to the institution's stated specification. |
| Entrance scorecard | Where the course uses one. |
| Category certificate | Where you are claiming a relaxation, in the format the institution accepts. |
| Transfer or migration certificate | From the previous institution, where required. |
| Character or conduct certificate | Where the institution asks. |
| Fee receipts | Yours to keep, for every payment, in the institution's name. |
Institutions differ, so treat this as the shape of the list and the institution's own checklist as the authority for your admission.
Originals: the one rule
Get a written, dated acknowledgement for every original you hand over, naming the document. Submit attested copies wherever the institution permits.
This is not about distrust. Withdrawals, transfers, education loans and scholarship claims all require you to produce documents on short notice, and an acknowledgement is what makes retrieving them straightforward.
Four things that hold admissions up
- A name mismatch between certificates and identity documents — by far the most common, and entirely checkable in advance.
- Attestation by the wrong authority. Confirm who the institution accepts before you queue.
- A migration certificate that takes weeks to obtain from a previous institution.
- A category certificate in a format the institution does not accept, or issued too long ago.
All four are foreseeable. Ten minutes with the institution's own checklist before you apply removes most of the risk of losing a seat to paperwork.
Frequently Asked Questions
What documents are needed for direct admission?
Qualifying marksheets and certificate, photo identity, photographs, an entrance scorecard where the course uses one, a category certificate where a relaxation is claimed, and often a transfer or migration certificate.
Should I give the college my original certificates?
Submit attested copies wherever permitted. Where an original must be submitted, get a dated written acknowledgement naming the document — that receipt is what makes withdrawal or a transfer straightforward.
Can a college keep my originals if I want to withdraw?
Institutions are not entitled to retain originals as leverage in a fee dispute. Ask for them in writing as part of the withdrawal request and quote the acknowledgement you were given.
What if my name is spelled differently on two documents?
Raise it before you apply. Name mismatches between certificates and identity documents are the single most common cause of delayed admissions and are far easier to fix in advance.
Do I need a migration certificate?
It depends on the institution. Where it is required it can take weeks to obtain from your previous institution, so check the requirement early rather than at admission.
